The project output To determine the location of the project at the Miami Landfill site after numerous studies and site visits, the project boundary was designated as 16 ha and the area was re-mapped. Then the location of wells, ponds, leachate transfer, and injection facilities were determined.
Brief description of the project

According to the mission of Mashhad Municipality Waste Management Organization in the field of environmental protection and also, the existence of waste leachate due to high humidity in Iranian waste; and on the other hand, high costs of design, construction and operation of treatment plant facilities due to high leachate pollution load, Its treatment operations are associated with many problems for municipalities. Therefore, the recirculation of leachate in burial trenches is a suitable option for this purpose. In 2013 considering to memorandum of cooperation between the organization and JICA, JICA experts in Mashhad approved the recycling plan proposal and the project was implemented with the presence of JICA expert. Miami Landfill site is located 35 km east of Mashhad. Waste disposal began in 2007at this site and now about 1100 tons of waste enters the site daily. Waste is neither separated from the source nor mechanically separated and more than 50 to 60% of the waste contains organic matter. Among the problems with this site items can be mentioned as waste spreading, odor emissions, odor emissions, irregular leachate leaks, and uncontrolled landfill gas (LFG) emissions. The main issues related to the landfill are leachate management and landfill gas emissions. Considering that the recirculation of leachate in the landfill reduces the load of leachate contamination and increases methane-producing microorganism’s activity, using recirculation method along with trench improvement operations can reduce leachate pollution and increase landfill gas production efficiency. In order to implement the plan, the whole scope was completely covered. In order to perform the project, four wells (two injection wells, one gas test well, and one control well), a leachate injection pond, a leachate collection pond, and leachate transfer and injection facilities were constructed on-site. After installing the relevant equipment and performing the rotation of the laboratory tests of the design, including measuring the amount of injected leachate and its penetration rate, measuring the rate of landfill gas production, leachate compositions and the temperature of the waste mass were measured. The results showed an increase in the methane production rate in the area under recirculation and a slight decrease in leachate pollution load.

Targets:

  • Landfill optimization and reduction of leachate pollution load and its volume
  •  Accelerate the stabilization of landfills and increase the efficiency of landfill gas production
